Ana Scripucariu-Ochiai
Ana Scripcariu-Ochiai has been doing a lot of cultural anthropological fieldwork on indigenous rituals and folk beliefs in Japan and abroad and has been visualizing the “invisible connections” she noticed in the process.
In “Blessing Beyond the Borders” (2019), Scripucariu-Ochiai explored the beliefs and Shinto rituals of her roots in Japan and Romania, and in “One’s Final Home” (2019), she used the grave of a Japanese man who died in Vietnam during the Edo period as a starting point for an installation work that questioned the sense of belonging, national isolation, and international marriage. Her unique point of view creates connections and inevitability between multiple time periods and regions, and a major characteristic of her work is that it intersects personal histories into stories that help to understand others.
This exhibition features the photographs of Yuriko Ochiai, Scripucariu-Ochiai’s mother and photographer who continues to capture the light of life, and her own photographs. The exhibition explores what emerges from the dialogue between the two artists’ eyes and their works, which capture Romania at different times.
