Shimura Noguchi
The mainstay of Shimura Noguchi’s creative method is the collage of fragments of everyday life. These fragments can be anything from a casual comment in a conversation with someone, to an ordinary object seen by chance on the way home, to an image of music captured in color. Noguchi picks up these fragments, sketches or remembers them, and paints them on canvas with a playful or mischievous spirit that sometimes creeps into the painting. Sometimes he uses his own sensibilities to create fragments of doodles, and other times he uses themes he has absorbed from his past experiences.

Some of Noguchi’s works feature inexplicable motifs that can be seen as letters or symbols. These are words extracted from poems, passages from novels, mere memos, and advertisements. By repeatedly overlapping and reversing the letters, they are transformed into “something that used to be a word” that has given up its meaning. These are placed on the screen together with things that we can easily recognize, such as vials and living things, and give off a sense of presence like a mysterious secret language. Things that used to have meaning are dismantled and integrated, making and losing meaning. By mixing the meaningful and the meaningless in his works, Noguchi shakes the senses and drawing people into a world with a mysterious atmosphere.
