Japanese Landscapes Discovered: Views From and For the Outside World

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
Finished
From the end of the Tokugawa shogunate to the Meiji era, many foreign painters visited Japan and painted beautiful landscapes and unusual customs of Japan, which they brought back home as souvenirs. Influenced by these artists, Japanese painters learned from them and painted Japanese landscapes and manners that they wanted to show to foreigners, and sold them as souvenirs to foreigners, or sold them in their study abroad destinations to raise funds. In this way, oil paintings and watercolors depicting Meiji-era Japan have long been loved overseas. This exhibition introduces the private collection of Meiji paintings that were collected overseas and returned to Japan. These works, most of which are being exhibited for the first time, depict Meiji Japan as foreigners saw it and as they wanted to show it to foreigners.
