From elegant historical figures to familiar icons, ideal images have at times been projected within the category of bijin-ga (“paintings of beautiful people”). It is not always women who appear in such paintings—attractive male figures have also beckoned people’s admiration. We explore images of beauty expressed throughout each era; including date-otoko, stylish men who embodied iki, the sophisticated aesthetic of the Edo period, as well as the strong, masculine beauty of the modern day and today's genderless bodies.
