Keiji Ito
This will be 86-year-old ceramic sculptor and painter Keiji Ito's first solo exhibition at the gallery and will feature his latest ceramic sculptures, recent oil paintings, which are the origin of Ito's work, and a collage of cloth and thread created especially for this exhibition.

The freedom of Ito's work, unconstrained by conventional frameworks, is strongly reflected in his career and interests. Keiji Ito (1935-) was born in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture. He grew up in Mino, where the pottery industry was flourishing and where major reforms in pottery were made during the Azuchi-Momoyama period.

He entered the Musashino Art School in 1954. He majored in oil painting under the tutelage of Yoshio Mori, Saburo Aso, and Nagao Yamaguchi. When he was a student, he was also attracted to Modigliani, Picasso, Klee, Kandinsky, the huge stone structures of Asuka, the Great Buddha of Asuka, and the abandoned Buddhist temple of Yakushiji.

After graduation, he worked at the Design Office of the Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Testing Center, where he was greatly influenced by the leader of the craft movement, Sakuzo Hinone. In the beginning, he only designed two-dimensional pieces, but he began to produce pottery on his own because he felt that there was a limit to the connection with actual three-dimensional pieces. Since then, in addition to daily utensils, tea utensils, and crafts, he has been presenting three-dimensional forms such as "sculptures made of ceramic" and "installations" that combine other materials such as iron. His work has become a guideline for many young artists, and he is leading the way in contemporary Mino pottery.

In addition to his studio, he has also set up a painting studio in his home since he turned 70. He genuinely enjoys painting, and his background in Eastern and Western art, which he acquired around the age of 20, has become a great opportunity for him to develop a new world of art. The world of his work, which crosses genres with ease, can be said to be characterized by the freedom and spontaneity with which he confronts them, rather than by his strong awareness of them.

His three-dimensional sculptures and diverse work, which seems to indicate a permanent presence, have gained a great deal of support, and his major solo exhibitions include "Keiji Ito: The Measure of Heart" (Gifu Prefectural Museum of Art/Paramita Museum, Mie, 2011) and "Keiji Ito: Painting, Craft, Form" (Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Gifu, 2013). His work is in the collections of many museums in Japan and abroad, including the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Honolulu, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
