Mika Hoshi
Mika Hoshi was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1979, and completed her doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences, University of Tsukuba in 2010 (Doctor of Fine Arts). In 2013, she stayed in Florence, Italy for one year as an overseas research fellow of the Agency for Cultural Affairs to study tempera techniques. She is currently an assistant professor at the University of Tsukuba, where she teaches younger artists, and an associate member of the Nikikai, where she continues to exhibit works.

This exhibition is divided into two sections, "Landscape" and "Interior Scene," and looks back on the trajectory of Hoshi’s work over the past 17 years, from 2004 to the present. In her early works, she depicted quiet landscapes based on the themes of "memory" and "time," but her style began to change around 2007, when she began to express the wind. Wind, like time, passes by without stopping. Hoshi says that she wants to record that moment in her paintings. The expression of the wind changes the landscape into one with dramatic elements. In her works depicting indoor scenes, Hoshi depicts complex spaces such as windows, mirrors, and compositions through doors. In the pursuit of this attention to space, she encountered 3DCG technology. Using this technology, she was able to experiment with a high degree of freedom in composition in the virtual space, and was able to create a variety of spatial compositions that had never existed before.

The themes of both landscapes and interior scenes not only depict individual stories, but are also designed to make a strong impression on the view. This exhibition features 37 of Hoshi’s major works in oil, acrylic, and tempera, as well as new works that are being shown for the first time. Please enjoy the works as if you were watching a scene from a movie.
