Masaru Iwai
The Tokyo-based artist Masaru Iwai has been creating films, installations, and performances about cleaning and sanitation since the early 2000s. Cleanliness has long been said to be next to godliness, but when we take a broader viewer, it can also reflect a contemporary puritanicalness that extends to ritualism and has hidden implications for the meaning of labor. Iwai treats the subject with warm humor, imagination, and a critical eye.

Art museums, with their expansive floors and large glass surfaces, are places where special kinds of cleaning occur daily. In this exhibition, Iwai spotlights typically unseen daily acts of art museum cleaning from a variety of angles. With Iwai as our guide, let’s turn our eyes to the hidden, consider why it’s kept out of sight, and whether this is truly necessary. Let’s clean up the museum!
