The window display of Ginza Maison Hermes is a theater open to the town. This time, the window display will be created by Tadashi Kawamata, an artist who is active on the world stage. Kawamata's style is mainly site-specific, and he has attracted many people with his dynamic use of materials and the beauty of his structures and forms.
Kawamata interpreted Hermes' annual theme "Human Odyssey" as a journey to expand the human imagination and explore its possibilities and envisioned the artist's symbolic tree huts and nests in the window. The tree hut, a hut constructed of square lumber, becomes a hub that constantly sparks our imagination. For example, it could be a secret base for children, a safe zone in the forest, or a hut to come back to after a wild adventure, all of which could be described as a floating house away from the ground. Nest, on the other hand, is a home for birds and animals, but for us, it is a place of wonder, curiosity, and a distant invitation to the story of creation.
The landscape created by the trees installed inside and outside the windows of this exhibition will create a space in the city of Ginza where visitors can look into the forest. The poetic sense lurking in the dynamic expression will stir our imagination. Maison Hermes Ginza's window display has been in existence for 20 years, but this will be the first time to attempt an installation that extends outside the window.
Kawamata's series of maquettes (models) will be displayed in the 16 small windows alongside the building. The work-in-progress structures are temporary and seem to symbolize a myriad of possibilities as if they were models of the huts and nests that exist in people's minds.
