Terracotta Warriors and Ancient China - Heritage from the Qin and Han Dynasties

Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art
Finished
In 1974, a farmer digging a well in an apple field in China stumbled upon the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, a large number of life-sized pottery figures of soldiers and horses made over 2,000 years ago, which stunned the world. The number of terracotta warriors is estimated to be about 8,000, and research is still ongoing.

In 2022, 50 years after the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China, the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, which have been protecting the emperor after his death, will come to Japan to highlight the history of ancient China.

In 221 BC, Emperor Shi Huangdi of the Qin Dynasty established the first unified empire in Chinese history. Later, the Han Empire, founded by Liu Bang, was one of the golden ages of Chinese antiquity. This exhibition dynamically displays approximately 200 artifacts from Guanzhong (present-day Shaanxi Province), the central region of both the Qin and Han Empires, including first-class cultural artifacts (a unique Chinese classification for the finest and most valuable artifacts) that have never before been seen in Japan. With the actual artifacts, visitors can observe the historical wonder of how the miniscule terracotta warriors and horses of the Warring States Period became life-size terracotta warriors and horses in the Mausoleum of the First Emperor, and how they were transformed into tiny terracotta warriors and horses in the Mausoleum of the Han Dynasty emperors. The exhibition also focuses on the similarities between the mausoleums of the First Emperor and the Han Dynasty emperors and the pyramids of Egypt and explores the mysteries of ancient mausoleums in East and West through satellite images.
