Artists

DeValence
DeValence is involved in graphic design in the fields of contemporary art, architecture, theatre, and cultural arts, and this resonates with Gyre Gallery’s genre-spanning concept. DeValence’s unique design techniques and communication prowess are well-regarded in every sphere, and the studio has worked on projects for the Venice Biennale, Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Pompidou Centre, Théâtre de la Commune, the Maison&Objet International Interior Design Fair, and Harvard University, as well as leading French contemporary artists including Pierre Huyghe, Raphaël Zarka, and Saâdane Afif.

DeValence’s graphic designs incorporate rigorous and effective visual systems through typography that promotes visual effects, with the intention of inducing the reader to actively take in the design. In parallel with the design work, DeValence has established a publishing house, B42, which publishes books on visual culture, including design. It also actively offers tools for exploring the role of designers in visual culture and society.

This exhibition, DeValence - Common Sense; Addressed to the Inhabitants of Design, introduces visitors to DeValence’s projects, ranging from the past to the most recent projects, and delves into the studio’s foundational theme of design as creation. “Common Sense” comes from the words of Thomas Paine, who was deeply involved in both the American and French Revolutions. By taking a sociological approach to the question of what kind of design represents the spirit of the times in today’s increasingly complex and diverse environment, the exhibition reveals the multifaceted and diverse nature of DeValence’s work.
