Artists

Chihiro Iwasaki
Children and flowers painted in vivid colors. The bright, sweet, and soft world of Chihiro Iwasaki's paintings has been widely loved by people of all nationalities, generations, and genders.

This was before Iwasaki began her career as a picture book artist. In the early 1940s, during Iwasaki's period of exploration, she met a certain painter. His name was Tai Nakatani. Chihiro was inspired by Nakatani's work and received instruction in oil painting from him. The war interrupted their artistic activities, but after the war, Iwasaki became active as a painter for children and Tai Nakatani as a Western-style painter.

Strictly speaking, their relationship lasted only a year or two, but it continued throughout their lives. The gentleness of their gazes toward the beloved overflows in all of their work, even though their genres of expression differ. This exhibition introduces their little-known relationship through approximately 110 original paintings, oil paintings, and drawings from Chihiro Iwasaki's picture books and 40 oil paintings and drawings from Tai Nakatani's work, as well as 20 related materials.
