Kana Kawanishi Gallery is pleased to present "Refraction of Reality," a solo exhibition by Akira Fujimoto starting July 23, 2022.

Fujimoto completed his graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts before joining Fabrica (Italy). He has been developing works with various materials, replacing uncontrollable phenomena in society and the environment with visual and physical phenomena as a meta, and implementing exhibitions and projects that question society. In this exhibition, Fujimoto, who has practiced unique art activities such as "Sono Aida," "Tokyo 2021," and "The Land of Marine Garbage," will once again confront his paintings in a solo exhibition at our gallery for the first time in four years.

“The war that we never expected; Covid-19 that we thought would end; the heaviest rainfall on the Japanese islands in recorded history; the shooting of a former prime minister, and so on. The reality we inhabit suddenly appears from the other side of the world, deviating from our imagination and expectations. I can only see the surface of the refracted world, but in my work, I try to depict the reality of the unseen other side,” says Fujimoto.

"In Landslide #Border," Fujimoto depicts the invasion of a border with white, blue, and red on a surface composed of two colors, blue and yellow. "Wiring Diagram" is a series of abstract paintings that invert our perception of space through ultra-thin lines drawn on a medium that refracts the reflection of light. Also on view will be a new work from the Replacement series, which manipulates the irreversibility of time.

We cordially invite all to this opportunity to see the latest developments of Akira Fujimoto’s expression, which is always moving forward.
