The gallery myheirloom is pleased to announce Aoi Tokunaga's first solo exhibition, “Assignment to Memory.” Its works, which aim to "make manga expression painterly," create a mysterious world where simplified characters and realistic aspects of daily life intersect, as if they were straight out of a comic book.

Tokunaga originally placed manga at the center of her work, saying that oil painting and manga production existed as completely separate entities. However, at the beginning of last year, she began to think about her graduation project and decided to explore the theme of this show with the idea of creating an expression that combines the two elements.

In 2021, she presented a work titled “Shuseki no Naka” (Within Accumulation) to much acclaim on Twitter, which was her first time to use this new method for works shown in this exhibition. She received the Mayor's Prize for her graduation project "If You Don't Try to See, You Can't See," created as part of the same series at Kyoto City University of Arts.

Tokunaga is currently enrolled in a master's program at the same university. This exhibition is an opportunity to see how she skillfully uses manga, a symbolic expression of contemporary Japan, by connecting it to painting.
