This exhibition, commemorating the renewal of the Kyoto Seika University Gallery, is an attempt to showcase the works of 11 artists with reference to keywords such as "gender/history," "body/identity," and "land/memory" under the theme of "border crossing" within existing genres, institutions, and values.

From the past to the present, the world has seen repeated conflicts and repression over geopolitical borders, as well as the fixation and disintegration of order. Today, advanced information technology and globalization have made the "crossing of borders" of people, goods, and information commonplace, and transboundary issues such as infectious diseases, environmental problems, and poverty have also become apparent. At the same time, customs, culture, memories, and values that are unique to a group or an individual are bound together by invisible boundaries and tied to the construction of identity. As we live in a world filled with complexity and tension, it is sometimes necessary for us to have an attitude of "crossing borders," moving freely between here and there like water, and reexamining ourselves and the world.

This exhibition features works by Shuzo Azuchi Gulliver, Kenichi Imai, Laurie Toby Edison, Chiharu Shiota, Yoshiko Shimada, and Taeko Tomiyama from the Kyoto Seika University collection, as well as works by five guest artists who have been active since the 2000s: Misako Ichimura, Motoyuki Shimomichi, Sawako Tanizawa, Yuki Tsumura, and Itshu Pan. The artists are from diverse backgrounds, generations, and expressive techniques.
