Dan McCarthy, Takuro Kuwata
In the global art scene, many artists have begun to incorporate ceramics in their work and long-practicing ceramic artists are being rediscovered. This trend has remained vibrant since 2014, with ceramic art establishing itself as a field of its own in contemporary sculpture.

Amid this environment, the art of Dan McCarthy and Takuro Kuwata continues to attract attention. The vivid colors and playful forms – as seen in McCarthy’s “Face Pots” and Kuwata’s bold artistic expressions achieved with glaze in his tea bowls made using the kairagi ceramic technique – fascinate viewers. On closer examination, one notices the technical refinement underpinning the appeal of their art – the application of ceramic techniques such as experimentation with glazing, the method of firing, and other approaches such as kintsugi and ishihaze. However, what these two artists share is not so much their pursuit of technical mastery per se, but how they both bring out the characteristics of the material, showing their respect for it while also viewing it objectively from the perspectives of different cultures and generations. In so doing, they expand the context of ceramic materials and pioneer a new realm of ceramic art. McCarthy and Kuwata both revere the inherently primitive process of creating ceramics, which entails not knowing the end result until the work is fired in the furnace.

Their joint exhibition “Dear Friend” presents about 15 works, including paintings by McCarthy and about 10 ceramic works by Kuwata. The gallery space was designed by the Tokyo-based architect Kentaro Ishida.
