Examining Western Prints – Etching: Mastering Line, Transcending Line

National Museum Of Western Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Jacques Callot, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Charles Meryon et al.
Since 2018, the museum has been presenting the “Examing Western Prints" series, which focuses on the main techniques of Western printmaking and introduces their production methods and the expressions produced. This second installment of the series will focus on etching. Etching is a metallic intaglio technique that involves the corrosion of metal by acid during the production process. Over the centuries, the pursuit of the possibilities of line drawing has not only led to the mastery of the line, but also to expressions that sometimes transcend the line.

This exhibition consists of two sections. Section 1 focuses on the production process of etching. Based on contemporary techniques, this section will introduce the principles of how an etching is produced and the various ways in which it can be used to expand its expression. Section 2, which follows, will provide an overview of the history of etching from the early 16th century to the modern era through works from the museum's collection, tracing the evolution of expression pursued by the artists. By tracing the history of etching with a focus on the techniques used visitors will be able to ponder the process that led to the creation of these works and take the time to "see" the diversity of their expressions.
