Artists

Yutaka Matsuzawa
This exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yutaka Matsuzawa with work from the collection of the Akio Nagasawa Gallery.

Matsuzawa began his career as an avant-garde poet and gradually expanded his activities to include symbolic poetry, abstract painting, and sculpture.

After three days and three nights of deliberation, on June 4, 1964, he began exhibiting art that relied on modeling, that is, art that consisted of "concepts that represent the basis on which the work is formed." He continued to work internationally as a pioneer of conceptual art until his death.

Matsuzawa's main style of presentation was a performance in which he read out the concepts he had constructed. In addition to presenting his work in regular exhibitions, his unique activities included organizing conceptual exhibitions and creating an international network through mail art.

In addition, because he created and presented his work in a personal way through letters, faxes, or direct hand-deliveries, it is likely much of his work remains undiscovered.
