Eyes on Tohoku 1930-1945

Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
1930s were years moving towards the Pacific War, and at the same time a period when the "Showa Modern" style, a part of the city culture, flourished. New visual expressions using photographs, international architectural style, surrealism and other avant-garde paintings grew popular, and the period was marked with the change in opposite poles - innovation and traditions, cities and provinces.
At this time many people with modern mindset simultaneously visited Tohoku area and were interested in the local architecture and goods, which they recorded, collected and exhibited.
This exhibition will present such multilayering "eyes" directed towards Tohoku, which was deemed to be a non-modern region, and will present more than 400 materials to showcase its rich culture.
