The Jisho/Juei Rebellion (1180-85) that took place at the end of the Heian Period (794-1185) is commonly referred to as the "Genpei Battles" and were a series of fierce battles between the Taira clan and the warriors led by Minamoto no Yoritomo. After Yoritomo destroyed the Heike clan and established the Kamakura shogunate, a period of power struggles continued between Yoritomo's successors and the Hojo clan and other influential court nobles.

Episodes of battles between samurai warriors for the survival of their clans were popularized through military chronicles such as "The Tale of the Heike" and "Azuma Kagami". During the Edo period, they were popularized in novels and Kabuki plays, and became popular subjects for ukiyoe prints as well, with numerous works depicted.

This exhibition focuses on this period, which is once again attracting attention through the anime "The Tale of the Heike" and NHK's historical drama "The 13 Ronin of Kamakura-dono," and traces the rise and fall of samurai warriors through Ukiyoe, including Taira no Kiyomori, Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Minamoto no Yoritomo.
