Artists

Gaku Tsutaja
Based in New York, the artist Gaku Tsutaja has created works about the historical tragedy of nuclear weapons based on research, interviews, and archival studies in both Japan and the U.S. Although there are major differences in the stories told about nuclear weapons in the two countries, there are similarities as well. Tsutaja, who examines and listens to both sides, strives to create works of art that transcend national borders to tell stories that should be shared.
The exhibition "Warp Drive" at the Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels is Tsutaja’s first solo exhibition in Japan, a homecoming for the U.S.-based artist. The main exhibit space incorporates Tsutaja’s video works with a structure that connects a motif of two types of barracks — those built in the U.S. in Japanese internment camps during World War II, and those built in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the war. The smaller space exhibits the artist’s two-dimensional pieces.
