Artists

Gekkosha
Gekkosha is the artist name of Toshiyuki Tsuji, who started out as a painter but felt limited by two-dimensional works and turned to doll-making. He established himself at a young age with exceptional works and has since achieved commercial success while remaining active in various capacities of the doll art world, from organizing projects to training younger artists. In 2004, Gekkosha participated in the world's first exhibition of round jointed dolls at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

In addition to his commercial works, Gekkosha has also been focusing on creating works with his own unique sensibility. His dolls of young girls, carefully formed from damp soil, have a simple reality, yet seem to be immersed in a world of distant longing. The dolls are not merely human figures, but also convey social messages and narrative scenes.

In this first solo exhibition at Bunkamura, Gekkosha will exhibit and sell a wide range of works, from small palm-sized pieces to large-scale works (mainly girl figurines), as well as installation works reminiscent of ancient Japanese Jomon and Yayoi pottery, and even the Terracotta Warriors of ancient China. The show demonstrates how Gekkosha’s poetic creations can transcend time and space.
