Haruko Nakamura
Fascinated by Tuscany, photographer Haruko Nakamura (1962–2005) devoted herself to the region from 1993 to 1998, traveling there as many as seven times in a single year. Through encounters with Ivo and Ilda, an elderly couple who live a traditional lifestyle in this idyllic setting, and their family, Nakamura beautifully and dynamically documented their dramatic, tender, and passionate relationships in a style that could be described as “gentle cinematography.” Nakamura produced photo book entitled "The Sound of Light – Pure and Simple" (2008). In this collection, she boldly captures not only the majestic scenery of the seasons, but also the flow of time and space, and even temperature differences, leaving behind fresh traces of her travels in the fields and mountains. Museum Haus Kasuya now presents Nakamura’s long-awaited unpublished work as the second installment of "The Sound of Light.” “Sound of Light Part II – Echo" records "other moments" that foreshadow the before and after of the previous works.

In these times when international travel has been greatly reduced due to the pandemic, when people have been forced to distance themselves from each other, Nakamura's photographs reveal the daily lives of Italians living in support of each other, capturing their moments of joy in dialogue with their families. These photographs remind us of the happiness of living with nature and each other, and of the mystery of our connection with the universe. These are images only Nakamura could have taken.
