Itaru Hirama
We are pleased to announce that from June 10th, 2022, to June 30th, 2022, the Fujifilm Square will host the exhibition "Hirama Itaru – Double A-Side". Hirama Itaru is renowned for his dynamic and vibrant portrait of artists, especially those taken for the Tower Records campaign "No Music, No Life". However, for Hirama, who was born into a family of photographers in Shiogama City, Miyagi prefecture, both his artist portraits, and his work at the Hirama Photo Studio – a family business founded by his grandfather, which he relocated to Tokyo in 2015 as a consequence of the Tohoku Earthquake – can be considered “A-sides:” Both are equally important in understanding his oeuvre.
2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the start of his photographic career, 2021 the 10th anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake. Looking back at these junctures, this exhibition will present ca. 160 representative works from both of Hirama Itaru's “A-sides,” offering the viewer a retrospective of his highly acclaimed oeuvre. The first section of this exhibition titled “A-sha” (artist photographs) will exhibit selected artist portraits from the golden age of the CD in the 1990s until today. In the second section titled “E-sha” (commercial photographs) you will find photographs Hirama Itaru took in his Tokyo studio, a place he understands as a place “to preserve the souls of humans.”
