Hitoshi Maeda
Born in Motegi, Nagasaki, Hitoshi Maeda (1939-2021) gained popularity for his unique style of expressing profound themes such as society, human existence, and light and darkness with a sophisticated design sensibility.

After graduating from Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University), Maeda worked as a designer while continuing to create his own works, but a major turning point came in the late 1960s when he won the Grand Prize and Study Abroad Award at the 4th International Youth Artists Exhibition in 1967 and went to Paris to study, returning to Japan in 1969. After returning to Japan in 1969, Maeda quickly made a name for himself by representing Japan at the 10th Sao Paulo Biennale.

A major characteristic of Maeda's work is the smooth repetition of color surfaces and forms using an airbrush. The physicality of the artist's body is diminished and a somewhat empty world unfolds on a screen composed in the manner of design, where traces of the hand, including meticulous work, are eliminated as much as possible. As can be seen from the titles of his works from the late 1960s, such as "Analogies" and "Human Market," Maeda has consistently addressed the question of the nature of human existence within the framework of society. Maeda's production methods also seem to emphasize the state of society in which individual human beings have become less and less present. In the series he produced after the 1980s, such as "MA (Ma)" and "Chocolate City," Maeda continued this awareness and turned his attention more broadly to the "world" that encompasses human beings and society.

This exhibition, held on the one-year anniversary of Maeda's death, traces the development of Maeda's art, focusing on works from the museum collection.
