Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum

Artists

Hazan Itaya
Ceramic artist Itaya Hazan was born in Shimodate-cho (now Chikusei City), Ibaraki Prefecture in 1872 (Meiji 5). In 1953 (Showa 28), Hazan became the first craftsman to be awarded the Order of Culture, and in 1954 (Showa 29), he and Japanese-style painter Taikan Yokoyama were made the first honorary citizens of Ibaraki Prefecture.

Hazan created many neat and prestigious works of art based on his strong belief that no compromise was allowed in order to create ideal works of art. On the other hand, Hazan was also a man who loved his hometown and its people dearly and valued living in mutual trust and empathy.

To commemorate this anniversary, the exhibition will bring together a selection of Hazan's masterpieces, including those in the Sumitomo Collection. In addition, the exhibition will also introduce various aspects of Hazan, who is known as the "Sage of Ceramics," through valuable materials that show Hazan's personality and feelings toward his hometown, which he loved and where he was born, as well as ceramic shards that were broken after a trial and error process.
