Katsuo Tachi
In a mixture of conceptual, minimalist, and new paintings, Katsuo Tachi chose paintings that could be done in the closest proximity to the sensations of the body. He continued to paint until 2008, the end of his life, and his work changed over the course of his short career, although from the early 1990s he began to paint with organic entities that could be identified as insects, a departure from his earlier abstract paintings, which were based on the color and materiality of paint.

This exhibition consists of works from his early works in the 1980s to the 1990s, when he achieved a certain level of accomplishment, and traces his footsteps up to his works in the 2000s. The six works to be exhibited include an oil painting made in 1988 when he was in his 20s, three drawings made in 1994, an oil painting made in 1995, and a large painting made in 1996, which were made during a period when not many works remained after the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that severely damaged Tachi's studio.

In addition, Tachi’s last work and one more from 2008 are currently on view in the National Museum of Art, Osaka's "Collection 2: Connecting Lives" exhibition (on view through May 22, 2022).
