Kei Ono
Since 2002, Kei Ono has been photographing high school students in Japan in the series "Blue Light" and "New Text." Ono traveled around Japan to meet these students, who requested to be photographed via the internet, and discovered that malls were being built in increasing numbers in various areas. As the series progressed, malls began to appear in many of the shooting locations as familiar spaces for the high school students who were the subjects.

The scenery of malls may provide insight into the changing landscape of Japan. It may also provide insight into our lives and ways of living in this landscape. As of the 2010s, Ono will continue shooting malls in earnest. The mall's exterior resembles a huge box that covers people's desires and differences. Those who appear in the mall behave in a way that is both connected to daily life and slightly detached from it. How does the mall, which is also a city, connect to and hide from the local landscape? While some malls have become ruins over time, others are still under construction. A 20-year project to document malls has become a common experience for people, and this work examines social cycles and human activities inside and outside these malls.
