Kentaro Kumon
Kentaro Kumon has been traveling around Japan 300 days out of 365 days a year to photograph various landscapes and people in Japan. To commemorate the publication of the book “The Sleeping Island" a selection of photographs from the book will be exhibited and sold at this exhibition.

Teshima, a remote island in the Seto Inland Sea with a population of only a dozen people, is not well known as a tourist destination. Still, its history shows that it has played an essential role in the development of ship management and shipbuilding technology. However, the island, which flourished in the early to mid-Edo period, is now a shadow of its former self and is in decline as its population continues to shrink.

Kentaro Kumon captures the rich climate of the island and its inhabitants, who have continued to breathe deeply, slowly, and quietly, without stopping, and thus have passed on the original landscape. It is as if Teshima has chosen to return to its original form, and the people seem to have desired and accepted this choice.
