Johannes Vermeer's "Woman Reading a Letter at a Window," the centerpiece of this exhibition, is an early masterpiece in which Vermeer is said to have established his own style, including the expression of light streaming in through the window and the image of a woman reading a letter indoors. An X-ray survey of this work in 1979 revealed that the painting depicting Cupid had been painted over on the wall, and for many years it was thought that Vermeer himself had erased the painting. In May 2019, a work in progress, in which the painting of Cupid partially appeared, was unveiled at a press conference.
This exhibition will present the original "Woman Reading a Letter at a Window," in which Cupid has been fully revealed through a large-scale restoration project, along with documents showing the restoration process, following the unveiling of the painting in the collection of Kunsthalle Dresden. This will be the world premiere of this work outside of the museum's collection.
The exhibition will also feature approximately 70 masterpieces from the collection of the Kunsthalle Dresden, including Rembrandt, Mettu, van Rijsdael, and other masterpieces from the golden age of Dutch painting in the 17th century.
