Lifestyle Design: Prosthetics and Aid Devices at Hansen's Disease Sanatoriums and Their Users

The National Hansen's Disease Museum
Finished
Patients and people recovering from Hansen’s Disease in sanatoriums have made use of a variety of tools to live their lives in their own ways. Under the isolation policy for Hansen’s Disease of the past, sanatorium budgets were inadequate and much of the labor was carried out by patients. Tin prosthetics and other devices handed down from generation to generation tell the history of the hardships faced by residents.

Since the late 1950s, occupational therapists and prosthetists have sought ways to protect limbs that have lost their sensory perception while still allowing the user to live the life he or she desires. The uniqueness of these aid devices has been enhanced to meet the expanding needs of users. There are now many aids that can be called "designs for individual lifestyles." This exhibition presents a variety of self-aiding devices, artificial limbs, and prosthetics, as well as photographs and stories about the people who use them. The exhibition is meant to deepen understanding of Hansen’s Disease and raise awareness of how people living with disabilities can pursue their own potential.
