Artists

Mai Akita
Mai Akita creates paper installations exploring the potential of extemporaneous performances that can be described as similar to live music. The result is minimalist in expression, yet powerful and full of life.

The word "anima" means “soul” in Latin. Akita has chosen the title "Paper and Animism" for this exhibition in the hope that visitors will feel not only a sense of life, but also spirituality in these works created with paper. Their key motif is the “fujizuka” mound modeled after Mt. Fuji at Onoterusaki Shrine in the Tokyo neighborhood of Iriya, where Akita was born and raised. It is said that animism in Japan developed into Shintoism, and Akita believes that these fujizuka guardian deities are an expression of the belief that everything has a soul. Akita’s works reflect her upbringing in Iriya, an area where shrines and festivals are deeply rooted in the local community.
