Artists

Marc Chagall
For the first time in about three years, Nagashima Museum will exhibit Marc Chagall's print collection "Daphnis and Chloe" from its museum collection. Chagall, known as the "Magician of Color" for his vivid colors, is still loved by many people today. As well as oil paintings, Chagall also produced many prints.

"Daphnis and Chloe" is a story written by the Greek poet Longos in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It is set on the beautiful island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea and tells the story of a boy, Daphnis, who is picked up by a goat herder, and a girl, Chloe, who is picked up by a sheepherder. Chagall created 42 prints as illustrations for the story and published them as a collection of prints.

The works, which follow the story as it moves through the seasons, are richly colored and depict the Greek landscape full of light. Chagall traveled around Greece for the production of this print. The story's pastoral landscape of ancient Greece and Chagall's colors create a bright and fantastic world of color lithographs.
