Since its opening in 1964, the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery has acquired approximately 1,300 works through special exhibitions and international exhibitions. Its collection reflects the history of art in Japan and the art scene in Yokohama from the postwar period to the early 1990s. This year's exhibition focuses on prints and photographs in monochrome.

In printmaking, the exploration of techniques, choice of materials, and images depicted overlap to create a variety of expressions. Monochrome prints are produced in a single color, and the richness of their images rendered through lines and surfaces is what attracts the eye. In photography, the subject is transformed into a flat image composed of light and shadow. An easily overlooked aspect of the subject is often revealed, leading to a visual experience that renews one's perceptions.

This exhibition consists of four chapters: "Line and Form," "Light and Darkness," "Landscape with People," and "Imagination," as well as a special section: "Takashi Hamaguchi: From 'Living in the North Sea'". Encounter the diversity of these artists' expressions created with the restrained palette of monochrome. (An interview with featured print artist Kenji Kitagawa, recorded in conjunction with this show, will be screened in the exhibition hall.)
