The Nara Prefectural Museum of Art was founded in 1969, when Mr. Yoshikawa Kanpo, a Japanese-style painter and genre historian living in Kyoto, offered to donate a part of his collection to Nara Prefecture so that it could be preserved and exhibited for future generations. The museum opened four years later in 1973 and held its first exhibition, "Kenkichi Tomimoto," in March of the same year. In 1978, the museum received a donation of contemporary art from Dr. Yoshikazu Ohashi, a doctor of chemistry, and in 1980, a special exhibition was held to commemorate the expansion of the museum. "The Yura Collection," featured items donated by Dr. Tetsuji Yura, a former professor at Tokyo University of Education.

The museum has received numerous donations from benefactors and has collected mainly Japanese art from the Kamakura period (1185-1333) through the present day. It has also organized exhibitions to introduce Nara-born artists such as Kenkichi Tomimoto and Ikko Tanaka. The museum's basic policy of collecting and exhibiting works of art with an emphasis on the region of Nara has remained unchanged since its opening.

In this exhibition, the extremely diverse collection of the Nara Prefectural Museum of Art, which includes Japanese paintings and calligraphy, Western paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, swords and armor, ukiyo-e prints, and poster designs, will be displayed under two themes: "Donor Selections " and "Art Related to Nara.
