Since 2020, the term "Nijigen-ha" gained popularity in the art market in China and other East Asian countries. The term "nijigen-ha/two-dimensional" is a broad term referring to Japanese games, idol culture, "kawaii" values, youth culture and fashion, and other aspects of "Japaneseness."
Over the past few years, the works of Japanese artists gained popularity through social media and have now come to form a very large movement. However, these artists are not well known in Japan, and there is still a lack of a platform for discussion of their work.
Miwa Kutsuna has been researching contemporary art history and closely following the East Asian contemporary art scene for about 20 years, examining the evolution of contemporary Japanese art. In this exhibition, she will focus on new expressions rooted in current pop culture and the culture and phenomena surrounding it.
