In commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Genso Okuda (1912-2003), a leading figure in the post-war Japanese art world, this exhibition will introduce Okuda and the artists of the Nitten (Japan Art Exhibition), where his career took place. Born in Hiroshima, Okuda moved to Tokyo at the age of 19, where he was introduced to the distantly related Japanese painter Kibo Kodama, and in 1936 he was selected for the first time to participate in the Bunten exhibition (the art exhibition of the Ministry of Education), the predecessor of the Nitten exhibition. After the war, he established his own style of landscape painting, using the red color known as "Genso red" to depict magnificent nature. He also excelled in waka poetry, and in 1981 he was chosen to be a guest at the opening of the Imperial Court Poetry Festival.

This exhibition will simultaneously exhibit his large paintings "Oirase (Autumn)" and "Oirase (Spring)," both of which are distinguished by their "Genso red" color, as well as a work in which he wrote a waka poem at the opening of the Imperial Court Poetry Festival.

Looking back at the history of the Kanten (government exhibition), from the Bunten to the Teiten (Imperial Art Academy Exhibition) to the Nitten, the exhibition will also feature work by Heihachiro Fukuda, who was active during the Teiten period, Gyokudo Kawai's works exhibited at the first Nitten, Kaii Higashiyama, Yasushi Sugiyama, and Tatsuo Takayama, who were known as the "Three Mountains of the Nitten," as well as outstanding works by Hoshun Yamaguchi, Kayo Yamaguchi, and other famous artists who were active at the Nitten.
