The Tokaido Highway connecting eastern and western Japan flourished during the Edo period (1603-1867) as one of the five highways for the exchange of people, horses, and information, becoming the center of a travel boom. In modern Japan, this road remains an important route for journeys, from those on the old highway that retains traces of its past to those aboard the highspeed bullet train. Mt. Fuji – Japan's highest mountain – is a conspicuous symbolic presence along the Tokaido. At times a source of terror and misfortune but also a sacred place connecting this world to the beyond through its majestic appearance, Mt. Fuji has long filled Tokaido travelers with awe and inspired artists. The Bernard Buffet Museum, uniquely located at the foot of Mount Fuji, now exhibits works by artists of the past and present expressing "the charm of landscapes with Mt. Fuji.” This show is an opportunity to discover anew the appeal of the Tokaido Highway and Japan’s most magnificent mountain.
