Pete Saigon
We are pleased to present “Imaginarie Skin”, a solo exhibition by artist Pete Saigon, from June 23rd (Thu) to July 3rd (Sun), 2022.
Pete Saigon is an artist whose work focuses on photography and video. Born in New York and raised in California, he has two nationalities, American and Vietnamese.
His past photographs and videos have been presented either as documentaries of the daily lives of the small community around him, or as creative works with an intention to add a narrative to his work. In both cases, he mentions the “invisible forces” as a great source of inspiration in the process of creation.
Pete says that a “great well” exists within him as a symbol of creation, and that the “invisible forces” that emanate from this well work on him to create many of his works.
The theme of this exhibition, “Imaginarie Skin”, is the human face. Changes in the human face are transmitted from the brain, such as emotions, will, and thoughts, which move the muscles of the face and are visually recognized as facial expressions.
For “Imaginarie Skin” Pete gathered a group of friends in an atrium in Nakameguro, where he bases his work, and with the help of his friends, he repeatedly experimented with the face in order to create this work.
Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Can” sublimated the barriers between the public and art into art with Warhol’s genius, but Pete says he liked to call “Campbell’s Emotional Canned Soup” and his own “Imaginarie Skin” when he first started working on it.
