The Shosoin Treasures are approximately 9,000 items that have been preserved in the Shosoin Storehouse of Todaiji Temple in Nara. They include many items related to Emperor Shomu (701–756) that were created in the Nara period (701–784) and cover a wide variety of fields including furnishings, musical instruments, toys, weapons and arms, stationery, Buddhist artifacts, documents, and dyed textiles. The collection also includes items from the West and Tang Dynasty China that are rich in international flavor and provide a glimpse into the interactions between East and West at the time when the culture of the Tenpyo era (729–749) was in full bloom. However, the Shosoin Treasures, which have been preserved for nearly 1,300 years, are extremely fragile and have rarely been shown to the public, except for a small portion at the Shosoin Exhibition held every autumn in Nara.
The creation of reproductions of Shosoin treasures began during the Meiji period (1868-1912) with the Nara Exposition held at Todaiji Temple in Nara. From the latter half of the Meiji period, the Shosoin Treasures Restoration Office of the Imperial Household Agency, which manages the treasures, began to reproduce the treasures, focusing on faithful recreation of the materials, techniques, and forms of the treasures. Since then, many excellent works of art have been produced by combining the skilled techniques of Living National Treasures and other masters of traditional artistry with the latest research.
This exhibition will showcase a selection of the finest Shosoin Treasure reproductions from among the hundreds that have been produced to date. Visitors will be able to experience the beauty and skill of reproductions of Tenpyo-era works of art, as well as appreciate the significance of passing on these techniques of traditional Japanese art.
