Artists

Rie Nakajima
Rie Nakajima graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2000 and moved to the UK to complete her studies in sculpture at Chelsea College of Art and Design and Slade School of Art and Design, University of London. In 2021, she was awarded the 2nd prize of The David and Yuko Juda Art Foundation Award in the UK, and her future activities are attracting more and more attention.

Nakajima is well known for her work that fuses the two media of music and sculpture, but instead of playing existing instruments to create sound, she uses everyday objects such as buckets, screws, plates, cups, stones, and scrap wood, and sometimes connects them to motors to create sound. The entire space is made into a sculpture with various noises, blank spaces between sounds, and objects that play these sounds. Nakajima is also active in the experimental improvised music scene, collaborating with musicians such as David Cunningham, David Toop, Miki Yuy, Charles Hayward, and Akio Suzuki. Akira Sakata, with whom she has collaborated at various venues since 2005, will join the artist for a talk and performance on Saturday, March 26.

In the previous exhibition at void+, the gallery itself was used as a speaker, and visitors were invited to listen to field recordings made at the seaside in Dungeness, U.K. In this exhibition at void+, the first in 12 years, the gallery will be transformed by the sounds of the sea.
