Rokuro Taniuchi: Delights of Home

Artists

Rokuro Taniuchi
In the Taniuchi Rokuro Pavilion, we display the original paintings for the covers of the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho. Creating them was the life work of Rokuro Taniuchi (1921-1981), who produced 1300 of them. Here we present a selection from that huge oeuvre of fifty paintings at a time, changing the exhibits four times a year. The choice of paintings is based on a variety of themes, with a new theme chosen for each exhibition.
The pandemic wreaking havoc in the past few years has thrown people throughout the world into confusion. Simply made going out for pleasure has become difficult. Instead, many people have discovered new ways to enjoy themselves at home. Even the scene outside one's window, if looked at daily, changes, we realize, with the time of day, the weather, and the season. If we revisit quite familiar objects and phenomena in our homes from a child's perspective, we can see puzzling and novel things. Rokuro Taniuchi's works express - most richly - the beauty latent in the everyday, the daydreams characteristic of children, and delicate states of mind.
Rokuro Taniuchi himself suffered from a lung disease in childhood that required experiencing repeated hospitalizations and changes of place to improve his health. His unparalleled powers of imagination were, one might hypothesize, cultivated in his hospital bed.
Rokuro Taniuchi's works present a world filled with clues for ways to enjoy daily life. Please enjoy exploring them.
