Ryo Shinagawa
Ryo Shinagawa continues to challenge the possibilities of "Japanese painting" that can only be expressed by modern Japanese people, using materials such as mineral pigments and foils, and citing styles that have been handed down even today, such as Yamato-e, Rimpa school, and Kano school.

Japan has created its own unique culture of "hiragana" by "simplifying" the Chinese characters brought from the continent. It is based on the act of "simplification" by replacing them with a unique Japanese "pattern". Inspired by this idea, he has developed a popular series of paintings in which only the flower part of the motif is simplified. In recent years, Shinagawa has been working on a new series of paintings that incorporate brushstrokes found in Western paintings, citing brushwork in ink painting and calligraphy. These works, with their calculated compositions and dynamic brushstrokes, updated with pop contemporary elements, show the future direction of "Japanese painting".
