Artists

Saburo Ota
Saburo Ota (1950- ) is an artist based in Tsuyama, Okayama Prefecture who creates works rooted in everyday activities. Born in Yamagata Prefecture, he graduated from the National Institute of Technology, Tsuruoka College before moving to Tokyo, where he began working in graphic design and also producing portraits and prints. In his search for familiar "print-like" objects, he considered materials such as train tickets and receipts. In 1984, he exhibited work using postage stamps.

This show features Ota’s works on the theme of "people and disasters," including a stamp-like work with a mask motif in reference to the Coronavirus pandemic. Also exhibited is Ota’s "Post War" series, which reflects on lives and memories lost in war. At first glance, his serene, exquisite works do not seem to say much. However, by contemplating the existence of human beings amid calamities, we may find insight into Ota's message and his questions to all people who will live in the future. This exhibition is an unaddressed letter to us all.
