Toward the end of the Edo period (1603-1867), a ghost story boom took place. People became increasingly interested in "scary things" such as ghosts and yokai (ghosts and goblins), as the nightly gathering of ghost stories called "Hyakumonogatari" became popular and "Sarayashiki" and "Yotsuya," representative ghost stories, became the subject of novels and kabuki plays. Ghosts and yokai also began to be depicted in ukiyoe prints, a popular pastime for the general public, and ukiyo-e artists used their rich imagination to create a series of horrifying and frightening depictions of such monsters.

This exhibition features works by leading Ukiyo-e artists of each period, including Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi, and Tsukioka Hotei, as well as paintings from the late Edo period to the Meiji period
