Setsu Asakura: A Centennial Retrospective

Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Setsu Asakura
Setsu Asakura (1922-2014) was a stage designer who was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit. He was also a Japanese-style painter and illustrator.

Asakura, whose father was the sculptor Fumio Asakura, first studied under Shinsui Ito and exhibited his fresh and clean images of women at the Bunten Exhibition. In the 1950s, Asakura studied at the Joban Coal Field in Iwaki, Iwaki Prefecture, and has a strong connection with the prefecture. His empathy for the vulnerable and working women in society was carried over to his stage art and illustrations for picture books.

This is the first large-scale exhibition of his work, featuring approximately 200 paintings, stage art drawings, and original picture book illustrations. The exhibition will provide a fuller picture of Setsu Asakura, an expressionist artist who moved through Japan during and after World War II.
