Shozaburo Watanabe, Shinsui Ito, Koka Yamamura, Hasui Kawase, Shiro Kasamatsu, Koson Ohara et al.
New or shin-hanga was invented by Shozaburo Watanabe, who advocated Ukiyo-e for a new era, and his publisher, Watanabe Print Shop (now Watanabe Mokuhan Bijutsu Gaho). While following the production methods of traditional Ukiyo-e prints, which were in decline at the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912), the "new prints" incorporated modern styles such as Western realism, and are still highly regarded today for their delicate and elegant finish. This exhibition focuses on Shozaburo Watanabe and the Watanabe Print Shop. In addition to work by Japanese painters such as Shinsui Ito and others, actor paintings by Koka Yamamura and others, landscapes by Tomosui Kawase and Shirani Kasamatsu, and bird and flower paintings by Shozon Obara, the exhibition also introduces work by foreign artists who were interested in Japan at the time and contributed greatly to the development of "shin-hanga" and explores its appeal, which is enveloped in freshness and freshness.
