Shinsengumi Exhibition 2022

Fukushima Museum
Finished
The Shinsengumi was a samurai-backed political group formed in Edo on February 4, 1861 that advocated “reverence for the Emperor and the expulsion of foreigners.” Isami Kondo, a member of Fukushima’s Aizu domain responsible for maintaining public order in Kyoto, acted as the head of the Shinsengumi and engaged in political activities as an influential mediator. In the Boshin War, Kondo fought on the side of the Shogunate until the bitter end, moving north through Tohoku up to Hakodate in battles. The Shinsengumi continues to be portrayed in novels, anime, dramas, and movies. In recent years, historians have been researching the Shinsengumi, uncovering new materials that reveal a different image of the group from the one known in novels and other popular sources. This exhibition takes into account the latest research and explores the true image of the Shinsengumi in the Aizu and Kyoto areas.
