Ritsuki Fujisaki Gallery is pleased to announce "Calcite on Myth: Myth" by Shohei Yamamoto, opening on Friday, 11th March, 2022.
This exhibition displays works from Yamamoto's new series "Calcite on Myth". These series are works, where on top of a printed photograph of a statue with mythological motifs, paint containing calcite is applied with a roller.
"Calcite on Myth", which are his latest series, has a structure which inverts his previous series in terms of figure and ground. In his previous series, images and symbols repeatedly applied by roller, ware the "figures". However, here a readymade image on the canvas is now the "ground". Abstract elements which were the "ground" in the past works, are now foregrounding to replace the images and the symbols.
The white paint that is repeatedly applied to cover the figure of the sculpture work, is mixed with calcite (better known as marble). By continuously testing the rate of paint mix, a distinctive matière was created.
