Artists

Shusaku Arakawa
Shusaku Arakawa (1936–2010) was a Nagoya-born, New York-based artist, internationally active since the 1960s. Most notably, his “Mechanism of Meaning” series launched in 1970 inspired many thought experiments regarding meaning and perception and had a great deal of influence not only on art but on science and philosophy as well. Later, his search transcended two-dimensional works of art to explore the human body and the meaning of existence itself. By way of experience-type works, he arrived at architectural projects such as “Yoro Park: The Site of Reversible Destiny” that involve viewers. This exhibition focuses on the phrase “a line is a crack” from the Mechanism of Meaning series. It presents 23 works related to Arakawa’s motivation to move beyond two-dimensional “cracks” toward works dealing with the body and architecture.
