Soichi Kiyooka
Kinkan Gallery is pleased to present "A Sign of This," an exhibition of Soichi Kiyooka's photographs, from
July 14th to July 31st. Soichi Kiyooka (1915-1991) was born in Kochi and moved to Tokyo in 1934. It was also a time when surrealism in photography, represented by Kansuke Yamamoto, began to emerge. Around 1950, when Ken Domon began advocating realist photography, Kiyooka was employed as a commercial photographer. In the 1960s, in response to realist photography, the "Vivo" group was formed by several young photographers (Shomatsu Tomei and Ikko Narahara, etc) and also Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Daido Moriyama and others published the photography magazine "provoke". Around that time, Kiyooka began his career as an independent freelance photographer. In an era when various movements of photographic expression were taking place, Kiyooka continued to produce photographs as a form of self-expression, making full use of photographic mechanisms and their possibilities, such as infrared filters, wide-angle lenses, and solarization. This exhibition will feature about 15 vintage prints.
